Literacy
A community literacy program funded by Alberta Advanced
Education and Technology and sponsored and supported through
local partnerships and funds.
We Provide:
Free one to one tutoring for Adults who need help with reading, writing, or spelling.
Free one to one tutoring for people who are learning English as a Second Language (ESL).
Free one to one tutoring for adults who need help with basic math skills.
How Can I Help?
There are many opportunities to volunteer with Project READ. You can become a tutor, or serve on our advisory committee.
Volunteer tutors must complete tutor training before being placed with a student. References are required.
You can also help by referring students to our program.
As a Tutor You Can:
Share the love of reading with a student by reading together.
Be a part of an exciting and rewarding volunteer experience.
Enhance your own learning.
Attend free workshops, conferences and social events.
English as a Second Language Classes:
This 8 week course is a fun way for adults to improve their
English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in a group
setting. Following the course free tutoring may be available
to help students continue to advance. Arranged based on
community needs.We have three offices to better serve our tutors and students:

FREE FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAMS
Books for Babies
This free program provides each new infant within the MD of Willow
Creek with a book bag containing information and books. The
book bags are distributed through a partnership with Alberta Health
Services; sponsored by the Chinook Books for Babies Society.
Mother Goose
Rhymes: This free
program for parents and caregivers is offered in Nanton three times
a year (Winter/Spring, Spring/Summer, Fall); it allows parents and
children to learn songs and rhymes in an informal atmosphere and
socialize with peers.
Sing and Play: Through a
partnership with Kids First Family centre this fun family program is
offered in Granum during the Winter/Spring and Fall.
Family Rhyme Tyme: A family
program for parents, caregivers or grandparents that promotes
positive behaviours through the use of songs, rhymes and movement.
This program is offered in Claresholm in the Winter/Spring, and Fall
at the Claresholm Public Library.
Parent
Workshops:
These workshops will provide you with easy literacy activities to
use with your children at home or on the go. Workshops will be
available as needed in each community.
A.L.A.P.S.
(Aboriginal Literacy and Parenting Skills):
This is a program that works with parents of First Nations children
helping them to develop positive self esteem in relating to literacy
and parenting. Through an 8 week session, parents will learn
about child development, building self esteem in children, positive
discipline strategies, and conflict resolution all within a peer
setting.
